Our reward system for school

After the Years of homeschooling I have come up with our fuzzy rewards.  K likes to earn rewards; so after much  thought I came up with the fuzzy reward system.


I came across some sparkly fuzzy's from Michael's for under a buck from their summer clearance 2 years ago.  Snagged those right up!  I store them in a plastic bin from the Dollar tree and added a label. We don't have any issues on son getting into the Fuzzys.
When son is on task, or I notice him doing something kind that wasn't asked of him he is rewarded with fuzzy's. Get's a 100% is a 2 point fuzzy.  He has lots of ways of earning fuzzy's daily but there are also ways to lose them.

Once a week I bring the school store out.  Everything in the store are things that I find on clearance or toys that son would enjoy.  With the store son is learning the skill of saving vs spending.  There are a couple of high point  rewards that are there to encourage him to save for.

The reward box is were I put small ticket items that don't take much to earn.  Things like specialty pencils, erasers, smelly markers and small candies.
We have things such as small Minecraft toys, Lego mini figures, Mixels etc.  The store is always being added to as I see fun rewards to encourage.

I think Im teaching him that with hard work there isa payout.  We don't use money for school work that's a whole another post.

How I put points on an toy -
I go mainly by the price that I paid for the item.   pencil is 1 point, something that was $1.00 is 5 Pts.  Like Minecraft toy/Lego mini figure is 20 points. Mixels ar 30 points, we also have special time with parent of choice by self for 50 points, go out to dinner with parent of choice is 75 pts. Movie tickets etc. As son ages the rewards of course will change and pts will go up.  The system is only here to encourage and just for fun.

Adding to our school library

Another great trip to the Goodwill resulted in $10 of gentle used books.

 

 

We already had Charlotte's web but for that price it would be a great book for paired reading.

Being a homeschool family we don't get help with buying the materials needed for school, so with saying that we look forward to some great deals.  This is all that I picked up in Aug with killer deals.  All of this for $17.94.

I do have a few more products that should be shown but they were put to good use right away

Working on Weaving

While watching the Olympics K wanted to make his own flag. So I had the great Idea why not have him weave a flag together with his own pattern.   He picked the colors of Romania and made a cool looking flag for K's made up country.  He said next year he'll march in the Olympics.  I didn't have the heart to remind him that the Olympics are every 4 yrs (2 if he's thinking winter :o))

 

 

Rockledge gardens.... Part 2

While at the garden you just have to go in the butterfly garden.  This place is just pure bliss if you like butterfly's.

Just look at how gorgeous this butterfly is.  Love the Polkadots

Here is a chart that they have inside of the butterfly house.  We had a great time looking for all the different  butterfly's.  We couldn't find a few of them because of season but found a few different types.

Germs Lesson

A lesson on the Spread of germs

I started off with some hand sanitizer and glitter.  The glitter is representing the germs on our hands when we cough into them.

We than passed the germs as simple as shaking hands

This are the passed germs from my hand to K's hand from one simple hand shake..EWWW

Then I had K go around the house doing things he normally would do in a day and each thing he touched he left germs that were on his hands

We talked about proper hand washing and when it's the most important

Lots of good questions about germs and how they can harm our body and how they can help our body

Feild Trip: Ben and Jerrys Scoop shop

This morning out homeschool group went to Ben and Jerry's to learn about how their ice cream is made.  Since this is just a scoop shop we watched a kid friendly DVD on how their ice cream comes together.

Some of the yummy Ice cream in the shop.  pretty smart to use rectangle containers over the round ones we normally see at scoop shops.  To keep  the ice cream cold there is a block of ice under each tube of ice cream and the cooler it's in.  I believe she said it stays about 20 degrees in these coolers

Here the kids are looking at how they store their ice cream.  The freezer to the right is the bump freezer.  This is where the ice cream goes as it becomes ready for when the front cooler needs a refill.  This freezer is 10 degrees inside

The back freezer is -30.In this freezer they need to wear jackets to go inside it's just that cold.  All the kiddos got to stick their hands in to feel how cold it is in their.  I didn't need to stick my hand in I was in the back and when she opened it I could feel that Artic chill :o)

Kayden right after sticking his arm into the freezer.  He thought it was really cold but neat.  I asked him if he wanted to move to Alaska where the weather can get this cold and he said "NO but thanks for asking"

We're on Christmas Vacation from school

We're on Christmas Break

Police hall of fame field trip

This past Wednesday (4/06/11) we got together with a group of homeschoolers at the Police hall of fame in Titusville, FL. Great trip if you ask us. 57 police officers have been killed in the line of duty since the start of the year. Let's all THANK our officers who risk their life every day to protect us.

This car was the cruiser of a police officer who was killed just 3 weeks after coming to Florida to pay respect for another officer who was killed in the line of duty. The car was donated when his wife came to pay her respect to her husband when his name was added to the wall. She went home to have the car donated to the police hall of fame. The neat thing about the car is that at the officers memorial everyone who knew him wrote messages to him and then the car was clear coated to protect all the messages. My heart just hurt at this station. 9/11. These are parts of the World Trade Center. All the adults in the group had to touch these and NO ONE spoke.
