HOMEWORK for homeschoolers

How homeschool works for our school

Each day there is a given amount of time for lessons and seatwork for each subject.  At the very end of the day there is an extra seatwork time to finish up workpages that you didn't get finished.  If there is anything that is still not finished it goes into the homework folder.  This doesn't happen much.

Now every day I think of things that student needs to get some extra practice on and I put these into the folder.  Normally things such as flash cards that need to be memorized, sight words and so on but I try to keep it light and fun. And there is always 15 mins of quiet reading.

Now Abeka also assigns homework in the reading/writing/phonics dept every couple of days

The reason with the homework is to teach student to be responsible of getting it done without being told and turning it in the next day without being asked.  Which student has 2 grades daily with one for homework being turned in or not.  Another reason for this is so that dad can see what we're learning and for son to have that chance to show daddy what he can do.

The teacher binder

My teacher binder.
The front cover is where I put the weekly plan so that I can just glance at it through out the day and see what we are teaching for each subject.
The back cover is where I have our details for our activities subjects.  Which these subjects need much more planning on my part to pull together the lessons.  I will get into those later this year.

This page is my attendance page.  Days that are colored in are FULL days completed, days that are blocked are planned days off.  As you can see the last week of August I had planned for it to be off but we ended up doing school a few days.  We don't have structured lessons on the weekends.

This is our August month overview page where I write in field trips or homeschool get togethers.  Yes, August was a SLOW month but the new school year was just getting started down here in the South.  Most homeschoolers somewhat follow the public school schedule for finishing summer break.  We personally school year around with our grade change happening in August.
This is where I store our weekly plans that are yet to come.  I try to stay 4-6 wks ahead so I'm not rushing through planning and yet I'm not sitting here every weekend planning for the next week.  I try to plan 1 weekend a month when the hubster has something planned with the kiddo.
This is a general guide of our main books for the year.  I supply a lot with other books, movies, Ipad apps, shows on tv and so on.  Which I keep a running list of outside material behind this sheet.
The grade sheet.  The pirate paper is just covering names and subjects
I purchased most of these pages from confessions of a homeschooler and edited them for our school

Getting ready for the week..part 1

Sunday evening after the mister is in bed, I pull out my teacher books, binder & files which holds worksheets.
I start reading the lessons for the week and pulling the worksheets (file folder by subject) that we need for the current week and then I put them into daily folders.  And insert new lessons worksheets (from binder) into file folders for the next week.  This method work for me as there are weeks when I end up dipping into my NEXT weeks lessons because son wants to do extra worksheets.  takes me just 5 seconds to pull out another sheet for him.

These are our folders..simple folders work best for the weekly folders.  The two folders at the end are an extra work folder if he wants something extra to do at the end of the week that's not related directly to workbook lessons.  Which is a blog in it's self of what goes into the EXTRA FOLDER.  The black starwars folder is his HOMEWORK folder.  Yes Homeschoolers have HOMEWORK as well.  Well at least my student does.  Homework for him is normally worksheets he ran out of time to complete or assigned work that was meant for homework.  We use Abeka for Math, reading, phonics, language, spelling etc. and they assign homework on certain lessons.

A little insight of how I get ready for school each week.  I still have a bit of pulling things on the day of but this is how I keep tabs on our work pages.
Have a blessed day :o)

Day 2 Music, Spanish speaking lesson, animals of Mexico, Mexico info, Craft time

Day 3 Music, Spanish speaking lesson, animals of Mexico, Mexico info lesson, Lunch time

Day 4 Music, Spanish speaking, animals of Mexico, Mexico info lesson, videoing and party

Off to the airport to depart for our next country...... Where do you think we're going?

The Pyramid or the plate?

Which one do you like better? Which one to teach with?

Well both of course. Since we already stated learning about the food pyramid we're going to stick with it and bring in the plate method as well. After looking at the NEW plate chart I am liking the plate chart. For the most part this is how I am going to teach K about the different portions and how they should look on your plate and the pyramid will be used to show energy levels. What I mean by showing energy sort of like a battery charging. As you eat the different food groups your battery charges and when you exercise energy goes out. Each portion has it's own graph to show energy in. Now what do you think about the new charts??
